Each machine model requires its own specific version of Black ink. Sometimes a series will have multiple versions, such as HD Black, Quick-Dry Black, etc.

Internally, risographs distinguish between Black in drums and all drums of other colors—which results in slightly different printing behavior with Black ink. It is the most optimized (and often most stable) of inks, designed to print and dry quickly.

Characteristics

Riso Black ink is actually slightly cool/blue tone, as seen with how it mixes with Yellow to form olive green overprinted colors.

While the different formulations of Black ink are distinct, and have different physical properties, they can be used somewhat interchangeably, and are backward compatable—assuming the tube housing them can be read correctly by the drum. Risographs have been able to distinguish between cartridges (tubes) of Black ink vs. color inks, at least as far back as the RA line.

  • Risograph models Riso GR logoRiso FR logoRPRN use a physical tab protruding from the head of the ink cartridge, which pushes a different switch inside the drum for a Black ink tube than a color one. Additionally, the cartridge set switches, and the drum PCB itself are sometimes different in drums of the same series (and the drums use additional devices to make interchanging them impossible or very difficult).
  • The RP HD Black tubes also used a different nozzle size than all other ink tubes. This can make it difficult to perform an ink tube transfer or drum transition from HD Black to another color or vice versa.
  • For Z+Any machine released with or after the RZ line, i.e. RZ/RV/EZ/EV/SF/SE and MZ/ME/MF/MH machines. machines, Black ink tubes are encoded differently in test modes and in the RFID sticker on the end of the tube (but these drums can still be reprogrammed for color ink and vice versa). This allows the riso to print with slightly different speed & pressure (and make masters using slightly different settings) when printing with Black ink.
